Recognized for donating profits from their part-ownership in YakeeNets, LLC, to provide scholarships, nutritional training and tutoring for youth in Newark, Camden, Paterson, Trenton and Jersey City, New Jersey.

Breaking the Glass Ceiling
Lewis Platt, former CEO, Hewlett-Packard
Carly Fiorina, CEO and Chairman of the Board, Hewlett-Packard
Recognized for breaking the glass ceiling by setting company policies to enable women to balance the demands of children and home life with those of the workplace. Such policies as flexible scheduling, work-at-home, job-sharing and sabbaticals gave mid-career women the option to stay with the corporation.

Washington, District of Columbia – A Renaissance for the Millennium
James V. Kimsey, Founder, America Online
Mayor Anthony A. Williams, Mayor of the City of Washington
Recognized for working together to bridge the divide of suburb and inner-city by providing educational assistance for economically disadvantaged youth. The Kimsey Foundation has provided support for Washington, D.C. based programs, such as donating a neighborhood computer center in Anacostia.

Bringing Retail to the Urban Wilderness

Starbucks Coffee Company
Recognized for their efforts in establishing retail enterprises in low-income neighborhoods showing that formerly shunned locations can provide excellent places to do business. Starbucks and the former basketball star jointly own 16 Starbucks stores in economically distressed, minority communities.

New York, New York – Gardens in the City
Bette Midler, Actor and Founder, New York Restoration Society
Rose H. Harvey, Senior Vice President and Mid-Atlantic Regional Director, Trust for Public Land
Recognized for reclaiming trash strewn, abandoned lots with parks and preserving community gardens in New York City. The New York Restoration Society, founded by Bette Midler, formed a partnership with the Trust for Public Land to launch a high profile campaign.

Detroit, Michigan – Michigan Opera House
David DiChiera, Founder and General Director, Michigan Opera House
DaimlerChrysler Corporation Fund
Recognized for using their resources to break down racial and economic barriers through special theatre and dance programs that attract African-Americans, and members of other ethnic groups, in Detroit and nearby suburbs.
