Background Information of Richard
Florida
Our opening session at White Oak was led by keynote speaker,
Richard Florida, Professor of Regional and Economic Development
of Carnegie Mellon University's Heinz School of Public Policy
and Management. A summary of his remarks and ensuing discussion
will follow.
Academic Background
Richard Florida's academic background includes a Bachelors
in Political Science from Rutgers College as well as a Masters
and Doctorate in Urban Planning from Columbia University.
Before teaching at CMU, Florida taught at Ohio State University
and has been a visiting professor at Harvard and MIT.
The Businessman
In addition to teaching, Florida works as a businessman,
author and advisor. He is the founder and co-director of the
Software Industry Center at Carnegie Mellon University - a
multimillion-dollar research institute that involves leading
computer scientists, software engineers, economists and social
scientists from across the university. The Center is supported
by IBM, Marconi, PWC and other leading high-tech companies
as well as by the Sloan Foundation and government grants.
It forecasts cutting edge trends in business, technology and
talent in high-tech industry. In addition to this work, he
heads his own consulting firm that focuses on technology trends,
talent attraction and retention, people development and regional
economic strategy which works loosely with leading high-tech
companies and regions.
The Author
Currently, Florida is working on a book entitled, The Rise
of the Creative Class to be published this year by Basic Books.
The book that is based on several years of research, examines
the relationships between successful cities and talent, technology
and lifestyle. Throughout his academic history, Florida has
published more than 100 articles and written or edited 5 books,
including Industrializing Knowledge published by MIT Press;
Beyond Mass Production published by Oxford University Press
and The Breakthrough Illusion published by Basic Books. He
is a regular columnist and contributor to Information Week
and his work is frequently highlighted in major national publications
such as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and U.S.
News and World Report. He also has been a featured commentator
in PBS documentaries about the US economy, global competitiveness
and the future of jobs.
The Advisor
Florida's distinguished resume does not stop there. He has
served as an advisor to the White House Office of Science
and Technology Policy, the US Department of Commerce, the
US Congress, state and local governments, the Canadian government,
the European Union, the Japanese government, and multinational
corporations. He sits on the board of directors for numerous
high-technology companies and venture funding groups. He is
also on the board of directors of the Andy Warhol Museum,
Team Pennsylvania, the Work Force Investment Board, the Coro
Center for Civic leadership, and other nonprofit organizations.
