The city of Roanoke hosted a branding charette on April 16, 2002, to introduce to regional stakeholders the idea of establishing a regional identity. Partners for Livable Communities directed the meeting, explaining why a regional brand was important and promoting discussion of a regional identity. When regional leaders decided to postpone the development of a brand, city leaders asked Landor Associates, an international branding consultant, to go forward with the development of a brand for Roanoke in early 2003.

In fall 2003, Roanoke, Virginia will roll out its new brand identity to employees and citizens. As part of the branding process, a new visual image and a positioning statement has been created to better communicate to other communities Roanoke's unexpected balance and charm, as well as its natural beauty and dynamic urban culture. The city's branding process began in early 2003, and included a broad spectrum of input from focus groups and man-on-the-street interviews. City leadership, city residents and Roanoke Valley residents, as well as business and civic leaders also gave input for this process.
