Conference on Community Art Centers Scheduled for May 2004

Alexandria, VA--An Unconventional Convention on how to start and operate visual arts centers for the benefit of both artists and the public will be held at the Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria, VA on May 21 and 22, 2004. This conference is sponsored and organized by the Alliance for the Advancement of Community Visual Art Centers (AACVAC) with associate sponsorship by Americans for the Arts, Partners for Livable Communities, The National League of Cities, the Friends of the Torpedo Factory Art Center, and Home & Design Magazine.

The exciting program will feature five panel sessions with experts and representatives from the following fields: Cultural Tourism; Art Center Prototypes; Architectural Renovations and Occupational Health Considerations; Community Outreach and Support; and Self-Governance & House Rules. The two-day program will include a closing night gala to coincide with the Torpedo Factory Art Center’s Thirtieth Anniversary.

The conference is "unconventional" in that there will be no meetings in hotel basements and no plenary luncheons. Instead, sessions will be held in the Torpedo Factory Art Center and neighboring art spaces. Further, attendees are able to choose their own accommodations and discounted meals will be available at one of the many local restaurants. The Torpedo Factory is located just five miles south of Reagan National airport and is within easy access to the Washington area’s major monuments and sites.

Early registration is encouraged as space is limited. The Unconventional Convention cost is $300 for registration before February 1, 2004 and $350 after that date. Checks can be made payable to the Alliance for the Advancement of Community Visual Art Centers (or AACVAC), in care of the Torpedo Factory Art Center, 105 N. Union Street, Alexandria, VA 22314.
