A message from Laura Durham, Creative
City Program Officer
Welcome to the fifth edition of the Creative City newsletter.
The summer is a busy time for everyone, and somehow we all become
much harder to reach in these few months. Though it's been exceptionally
hot everywhere (even up in Marquette County), I am sure it has
not stifled our creativity. The project continues on, as we
are busily trying to wrap up technical assistance visits and
move on to our work on the Creative City publications.
Many of you have been in communication with our summer interns,
who are working hard to document "best practices"
in each of our participating communities. They are here for
two more weeks, and hope to complete a good set for each city.
Their endeavors are much appreciated in our effort to publish
a Creative City Best Practices book. I would like to thank both
them and those of you who have been so helpful in providing
them resources. On the same subject, you know that we are hoping
to find different terminology for the publication. There was
common agreement in our last meetings that "best practices"
is overused and means very little to our work. I am still seeking
input from all of you on a better phrase, and would appreciate
any feedback in the next few weeks.
The Issue
in Focus of the newsletter revolves around leadership
of the Creative City. Each of our participating communities
is constantly exploring the theme of leadership, and we have
found a number of examples amongst the group that reflect creative
leadership efforts. Our brief article on leadership provides
an introduction to the impact of leadership on our Creative
City goals, as well as a number of links to examples of your
successes in the leadership arena. Mayor Hood and the City of
Orlando exemplifies many of the qualities we look for in leadership,
and Orlando is highlighted in our Spotlight
section. Creativity is abundant in the City's work, and appropriate
leadership has been a key component.
As usual, we have tried to pack this issue of the newsletter
with additional articles of interest in our News
You Can Use and Creative
Corner sections, upcoming
events and contact information for technical assistance.
We are also in the process of a complete overhaul of our website.
This will not affect the content of the newsletter, but will
hopefully vastly improve the quality of your "visit".
When the new site comes online, the Creative City newsletter
will no longer be password protected.
Here at Partners we have been busy with technical assistance
visits, work on our Creative City publications, and planning
future events and services for the project. The exciting work
never ends as you all continue to move forward with Creative
City agendas! |
