LIVABLE LOUISVILLE: Creative City Fall
Conference 2001
POSTPONED
September 24, 2001
Hello Creative City Participants:
I sat down earlier this morning to write a letter encouraging
all of you to participate in the upcoming conference in Louisville,
despite the recent tragedy of September 11. In this unfinished
letter, I had hoped to make the point that recent events made
it especially important for us to move forward with the Creative
City agenda.
This afternoon, however, we discussed the event with the
mayor's office in Louisville and decided to postpone the conference.
Due to pressing issues in home cities as well as concerns
for safety, all mayors have been asked to travel only when
absolutely necessary. I know others of you are hesitant to
travel as well. As this directly affects the Creative City
conference attendance, we jointly decided that postponing
the conference is the best decision at this time.
Although we have postponed the conference, we are in no way
postponing our Creative City agenda. As I am sure you noticed
on our home page, Partners for Livable Communities is struggling
along with everyone else to make sense of recent events. This
is not an easy task. What is clear, however, is that a focus
on livability is now more important than ever. Partners remains
fully committed to helping you achieve your vision of a safe,
sound, celebrated, productive, and creative livable city.
While we are saddened by the recent national tragedy, we should
and will move forward. Advancing agendas for more livable
cities and communities is one way we can respond positively
to what has happened.
I anticipate that all of us will be spending time exploring
our capacities to respond, rebuild, and restore our communities.
We should also focus on the assets of our cities, thinking
of ways to creatively leverage those assets to increase the
quality of life within our communities. While we cannot reschedule
a fall meeting on short notice, I will be contacting each
Creative City individually to arrange a visit in the next
few months. It is our hope that we can achieve the goals of
our fall meeting through these visits. We will discuss each
participating city/community's Creative City agenda, the next
steps in implementation, and the Creative City research and
public policy project.
In mid-October I will send out a draft outline of research
and public policy areas that have been identified thus far.
My visits (or conference calls, if necessary) will provide
each community's leadership with an opportunity to review
the outline, define the most important areas, and determine
how each city/community will contribute to the Creative City
research and publication processes.
I apologize to everyone for the late notice in postponing
the conference. Unfortunately, it seems to be a common occurrence
in the past few weeks. We will be rescheduling the conference
in Louisville, and I will let you know the details as we make
final decisions. (We should know the new dates by early next
week.) We will also be posting all updates here on the web
site. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to
contact me at (202) 887-5990, ext. 18, or via email at ldurham@livable.com.
Sincerely,
Laura Durham,
