Owasco River Kayak and Anglers Park Auburn New York is embarking on a new project designed to bring people into downtown from outside the region and give those from the City a new venue for recreation in the heart of the community. The Owasco River Kayak and Anglers Park will create a nationally competitive kayak course in a waterfront park at the center of the downtown business improvement district. The centerpiece of the park will be a series of manmade rapids and surfing waves where kayakers will be able to ply their craft for hours on end, honing their skills and teaching others the fundamentals of this rapidly growing sport. It will be the first urban kayak facility in the region.
The Kayak Park is part of an overall downtown revitalization strategy, which includes expanding access to the Owasco River waterfront and re-connecting the river’s edge - both literally and figuratively, to the existing street pattern of downtown. Funding for the project, from federal, state and local resources, is in place for Phase I, and the project is scheduled for construction in the summer of 2006.
