In the midst of disaster planning for the upcoming hurricane season and the County’s many innovative programs, Hillsborough County is working to get their Aging in Place program off of the ground. Instead of focusing on elders that need extensive care, the County has designed a program called WAVE: Wellness and Vitality for the Elderly that focuses on engaging elders in the community and activities, and providing services through partnerships with the Health Department, the Parks and Recreation Department, the Southwest Florida Area Agency on Aging, YMCAs, health centers, and various other facilities. As a part of this initiative, the County has set aside $400,000 for senior citizen transportation to recreational and educational places, and has a new 40,000 square foot community center in the works that will house a library, senior center, and head start classrooms. The different functions will share space and certain programming and be attractive to a more active aging population. (Read more about Hillsborough County’s Journey to Being the Best!
