Spotlight: Ipswich, Queensland, Australia
Regional Cooperation

In expectations of the growing region of South East Queensland, new Premier Treasurer Peter Beattie stated in his first speech on August 2nd that he would work closely with Ipswich City Council to ensure sensible future development.  As he described, Ipswich faces a potential population doubling, necessitating new dwellings and an in increased focus on protecting the environment in the face of new industries.  The South East Queensland Regional Plan sets out to guide the direction of future development, and includes such changes as a possible extension of the Ambery Aerospace Park and plans for a new inland ‘port’ that could boost economic activity within the area.  In addition, the Regional Plan identifies a new urban growth corridor for housing and industry, which includes two pre-existing Universities that potentially could have some influence in increasing the amount of knowledge-intensive industries in the overall area.  (Read more about Ipswich’s Entrepreneurial Leadership)
