Partners for Livable Communities and the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging (n4a) are working with the City of Rochester, NY to develop policies and tools that will lead to an environment that is both elder friendly and that incorporates the principles of Smart Growth. The constituencies supporting older persons and those that support sustainability have much in common. The opportunity to demonstrate this linkage is perfect for Rochester where the population is aging and where the mayor supports Smart Growth. Rochester has a unique decentralized governance structure in place that facilitates the gathering and dissemination of information as well as building public support. This pilot project will provide Partners and n4a the necessary information to develop a National Blueprint for Aging and Smart Growth that can be a model for communities throughout the country. In addition to Smart Growth and Aging in Place Initiatives in Rochester, the greater community is also concerned with diversity. Just recently, Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) has spearheaded efforts to vastly increase the amount of diversity on campus and in the community, recognizing that greater diversity at RIT both adds to the quality of life and experience on campus and in the community, and bolsters the
number of minorities in the technology, computers, and engineering fields, where they are traditionally underrepresented.
