| Regional Growth Management Strategy The Regional Municipality of Waterloo is a mixed urban and rural area with seven local municipalities and 480,000 people. The region is in Year 2 of implementing a Regional Growth Management Strategy which includes over 80 projects. Many of these studies involve partnerships with the business, cultural, and academic communities. Some key objectives of the Strategy are: to build a rapid transit line in the ‘central corridor’, an alignment of the core areas of three cities; place firm boundaries on urban development; enhance the natural environment, protect groundwater and monitor air quality; improve health through changing the built environment; consider how growth affects human services; protect and promote heritage features and landscapes; and build vibrant urban spaces.
